Food security, climate resilience and land-use rules

As I’m sure you are aware, Strata councils generally decide what the “rules” of a complex are, but if you are saying that sometimes City Bylaws prevent things like gardens then perhaps they need to have a regular review (eg; every few years) of those bylaws to make sure they reflect the current climate and realities. The city should do its best to remove barriers such as you mention & as they make sense. I’d support the idea of a regular review of bylaws to ensure they line up with the realities of everyday living.

2. The right to air-dry laundry

Similar to the question about garden spaces, I’d support regular review of any city bylaws that makes everyday life more difficult for residants. If needed, city council can advocate to provinical authorities where there is overlap.

3. Recycling and organics in multi-unit buildings

I believe the city already requires strata complexes to provide recycling opportunities with the complex. If that is not working then I’d favor working with Strata councils & building owners to comply with the regulations & system already available.

4. The drug poisoning crisis

This is a complex issue that the city council cannot solve on its own. We need to advocate with all levels of governments and various agencies & service providers to cooperativley work together in Partnerships to help make a difference in this area.

5. Wildfire smoke and indoor air quality

The BC building code already has requirements around standards for building safey including air quality, the city can also choose to harden requirements but cannot dictate what BC codes require. As appropriate, council can work to make sure city owned facitliies stay up to code and also advocate for incentives for building owners/homeowners to upgrade filtration systems as needed.

Sincerely,
Steve

1.
